PBHS - Pilots!

I remember sitting in Mr. Chaney’s music class at Wilmington Junior High School and he was telling us about a visitor we could be expecting from Banning High School’s new music director, Mr. Woodson. Mr. Chaney was a solid teacher, but strict and demanded your best and I didn’t even know if I wanted to play music when I got to Banning, but after meeting Mr. Woodson I knew I wanted to be in the band.

At the beginning of summer 1976, I fractured my hip and had to have surgery and I would be on crutches for 4-6 weeks. I was bummed out because Mr. Woodson wanted us to start practicing our marching and being on crutches wasn’t going to fly and I was afraid I wouldn’t make the band. Mr. Woodson said, “ I don’t care if you are on crutches or not, if you want to be in the band you got to practice”.

I played the tuba and couldn’t carry it around and walk on crutches too, but Mr. Woodson let me hobble my butt around on crutches until I could walk on my own. Mr. Woodson is responsible for my most unforgettable memories throughout my entire 3 years at Banning. He is also responsible for my staying in high school and opening my eyes to many of life’s experiences one doesn’t normally think about. You ever see Mr. Woodson shoot from half court? Nothing but net, everytime. Thanks Woody!
